Coffin Comics leaves Kickstarter as Competition Enters (and slays)

Summary

• Heavy Metal enters the Kickstarter territory, challenging Lady Death’s spot on the market.
• 10 days later, Coffin Comics announces their transition away from third-party platforms.

“Heavy Metal Inspired”

Since October 2024, two out of three of Coffin’s campaigns hit lower numbers than their average (Mike Morgue and The Deadly Trio). Some speculate the roughly 9% platform fee per campaign might be the reason for the transition to Coffin Launch, their new in-house platform. If funds were over-extended, it could be a good way to recoup losses.

Other speculation is that Coffin chose to back out of the territory upon Heavy Metal Magazine’s arrival. Advertised on Kickstarter as being “Heavy Metal inspired”, Coffin often features Lady Death in homage form, sometimes as Taarna from Heavy Metal. Per Coffin’s own words via threats of litigation, homages are supposed to get permission or else they are illegal. If Coffin did not get permission from Heavy Metal, they could (by their own logic) find themselves in legal trouble.

Or perhaps the Queen of Bad Girls in comics has simply come to claim her rightful throne. Already over $407,000 with 23 days left to go, Heavy Metal rakes in the sales on their relaunch campaign, humbling Lady Death’s average sales of 200k-400k. Coffin might be considering faltering future sales when held up against the real deal and decided to take Lady Death away from competition. We’ll be eager to see what’s in store for Coffin Launch.
